Mount Kenya is the best place for hiking in Kenya. Mt. Kenya is the second-highest mountain peak in Africa. It was considered the most sacred peak in old Africa. They considered it Kirinyaga (a Place of light).

Mt. Kenya is a stratovolcano created approximately 3 million years ago during the opening of the East African Rift. Batian the highest Peak of Mount Kenya is approximately 17000 feet long. It is situated about 10 miles south of the equator.

Many tribes are living in the surrounding of mount Kenya but the main tribes are Kikuyu, Ameru, Embu, and Maasai. The Kikuyu are found in large numbers on the southern and western sides of the mountain. They do farming on the very fertile volcanic soil on the lower slopes.

Mount Kenya is also considered the throne of God Nagai, on earth. Kikuyu people believe that when god Nagai left on earth he use to leave in mt. Kenya. The lower slope of the mountain is never been glaciated like the upper one. It is used for cultivation. Hiking in Kenya is wonderful to experience for the trekkers.

Let’s explore the different routes to explore Mount Kenya. There are many routes available for trekking but mainly we are going to talk about three main routes here for mount Kenya trekking.

NARUMORU ROUTE

This is a trek of 4 days and 3 nights in the mountains. It costs approximately 600 USD / Person. For this trek, one has to leave Nairobi in the early morning at 5:30 A.M. for Naromoru. It is almost about three hours of Journey.

One can see The Tropical Rain Forest, Rose Wood, Bamboo Jungle,  and Heather Zones on the way. One can also find some of the rearrest spices which are only seen in mt. Kenya. The camps we visit are MACKINDERS CAMP, SHIPTON’S CAMP,  POINT LENANA, OLD MOSES, etc.

Hiking in Kenya

CHOGORIA-SIRIMON ROUTE

This trek is for 4 days and 3 nights in the mountains. Chogoria route is the most Scenic route up Mount Kenya. One can see Nithi falls, Mugi Hills, Lake Michelson, and Lake Ellis on the way to the trek.

The main attractions on the hike are Road head Camp, Mintos, Shiptons, Point Lenana, Old Moses. These are the most popular stops on the way.

CHOGORIA ROUTE

This trek is for 5 days and 4 nights in the mountains. The Kenyan people call it god’s crown. This route offers the best scenic views when compared to all other routes of hiking in Kenya.

The main places we visit during hiking mt. Kenya by Chogoria route is Road head Camp, Mintos, Shiptons, Point Lenana, Old Moses, and Sirimon Gate. This trek will cost around 450 to 500 USD with us.

SIRIMON ROUTE

This trek is for 3 days and 2 nights in the mountains. This is a short trek for trek lovers for those who are short on time or the first-timers. The shorter duration of the trek makes it possible for newbies to try.

The main places we visit during hiking mt. Kenya by Sirimon route is Sirimoni gate, Old Moses camp, Shiptons Camp, and Point Lenana. This trek will cost around 300 USD to 400 USD with us.

Hiking in Kenya: Mount Meru

In Kenya there is another mountain that often attracts visitors for a trek, is mount Meru. This trek will take 4days and 3 nights in the Kenyan mountains. From the Momelia gate of Arusha national park, we embark upon our journey to the top.

First, we reach Miriakamba Hut at 2514 meters situated in an idyllic grassy glade. From there we go to Saddle Hut at 3570 meters. We stay at the Saddle Hut overnight on day two.

From there we go to Rhino Point at 3800 meters and after that to watch the sunrise at Cobra Point 4350 meters. This trek is the greatest visual treat for a hiker. This trek will cost around 800 USD with us.

Let’s start with a backpack, which the most essential. The size of the back is crucial for the number of things you want to carry. Next in the queue is shoes, if you are not regular this a must-have else serving on the mountains will be unbearable.

The use of woolen shirts and good jackets are recommended better if it is made of leather. Thermal coats and thermal underwear are also very important for serving in extreme conditions. A pair of gloves is very important as the temperature starts to drop drastically after a certain height.

Water bottles and water purifying tablets are a must as it will be very necessary on the way. Binocular and camera are also necessary if want to enjoy the scenic views. In some places, trekking poles are very important too, especially in the snowy mountains.
