Park Highlight: Close-range views of elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro backdrop
About a four-hour drive (240 km) southeast of Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is well known for its herds of big-tusked elephants. A scenic park in its own right, it’s synonymous with two particular things – majestic herds of elephants and glorious views of Mount Kilimanjaro in neighboring Tanzania. Kenya’s second most famous national park after the Masai Mara National Reserve. It was declared a UNESCO-Mab Biosphere Reserve in 1991.
Safari Itinerary
Approx. Drive Time: 4.5 – 5.5 hours (depending on traffic and road conditions)
You’ll be picked up from the airport by your safari guide. Begin your scenic drive towards Amboseli National Park, located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. You’ll arrive at the lodge in time for lunch and some time to rest. In the afternoon, head out for a game drive in the park, known for its large herds of elephants, open plains dotted with acacias, and stunning backdrops of Kilimanjaro (weather permitting). You’ll also have the opportunity to spot lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, and a wide variety of bird species — Amboseli is a paradise for birders and wildlife photographers alike.
In the evening, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Meal Plan: Lunch & Dinner
Morning Game Drive & Return Drive
Wake up early for a sunrise game drive when predators are more active and the views of Mount Kilimanjaro are clearest. You’ll explore swampy areas frequented by elephants, pelicans, and hippos. After the morning drive, begin your return journey to Nairobi with optional stopovers for curio shopping or refreshments. You’ll arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon.
